Hash marks are typically made with varying amounts of flour... depending on who's
haring (you know who you are!)  Carpenters chalk may be mixed in to colorize the
flour - which is usually a good idea during winter hashes, unless the hare is a real bastard.  

The Buffalo hash also uses toilet paper, orange marking tape, pipeline markers, dog
excrement, sidewalk chalk, and glitter... essentially anything the hare has spare while
laying trail.
